Gastroenterologist Alexey Paramonov said that there are several myths associated with pomegranate juice, especially regarding its special benefits.
The doctor emphasizes that The pomegranate itself contains many useful substances. 100 grams of grains contain 21% of the daily value of vitamin K, 17% of vitamin C and 16% of fiber.
It’s a different matter when it comes to juice.
— There is a general rule: juices are drinks with a high sugar content. In 100 ml of pomegranate juice there is about 14% of it – and a small content of vitamins. Therefore, they are more harmful than useful, the doctor noted.
The well-established opinion is that pomegranate juice is needed to improve hematopoiesis; it is prescribed for low levels of iron and hemoglobin.
According to the doctor, pomegranate juice does not cure anything. If iron and hemoglobin are low, tablets and, in some cases, injections are needed.
One glass contains only 0.249 mg of the mineral. That is, to be normal, you will have to drink at least two liters a day, which can lead to too much sugar.
Juice can be prescribed if a patient with gastrointestinal diseases needs to recover from strict diets in order to eliminate vitamin deficiencies and body weight. In this case, it will “work.”
Pomegranate juice should not be drunk on an empty stomach, the doctor warns. Firstly, it contains too much sugar, which will inevitably lead to a spike in blood glucose. Secondly, high acidity and high tannin content can trigger reflux.
What is the “correct” pomegranate juice? You need to buy a pomegranate and squeeze the juice. That's it.
As a last resort, store-bought juice should be labeled “100% pomegranate juice,” directly pressed, contain nothing other than pomegranate, produced from September to November.
The pomegranate itself is certainly useful, but is not a medicine.
1. Antioxidants: Pomegranate is rich in antioxidants such as polyphenols and anthocyanins. These compounds help protect blood vessels from free radical damage, reducing inflammation and the risk of atherosclerosis.
2. Lower Blood Pressure: Research shows that drinking pomegranate or its juice may help lower blood pressure. This is especially beneficial for people with high blood pressure and risk of cardiovascular disease.
3. Improves Blood Flow: Pomegranate helps improve blood flow and dilate blood vessels due to its nitrate and polyphenol content. This may help improve endothelial function and reduce the risk of blood clots.
4. Reduce Bad Cholesterol: Some research suggests that pomegranate may help reduce bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein) and increase good cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein), which promotes vascular health.
5. Anti-inflammatory properties: Pomegranate contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties. This can help reduce inflammation in the blood vessels and improve their function.
