How to understand that parasites have settled in your body: gastroenterologist

belly

Gastroenterologist Sarah Mesilhi spoke about five signs of the presence of parasites in your body.

A parasite is an organism that lives inside or outside of another organism, feeding on its host. It takes all the nutrients to survive on its own. Usually in humans, parasites infect the digestive system.

More than 4.5 billion people are infected with parasitic diseases in the world. The causes of infection can be different, such as poor hygiene, an insect bite, or eating raw fish. Often, even close contact with a pet can cause parasites to appear in your body.

The most common parasites in humans are pinworms. They live in every region of Russia. Roundworms are the second most common parasite that enters the body through the consumption of unwashed vegetables and fruits. If you do not see a doctor in time, the parasites can affect the heart, lungs, gallbladder and intestines.

How to avoid parasites in the body:

  • Wash your hands often

  • Avoid undercooked fish in the diet

  • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating

  • Drink only boiled or filtered water

Gastroenterologist Sarah Mesilhi shared five of the most common signs that you have intestinal parasites.

The main symptom is a feeling of hunger after eating. People who have intestinal parasites feel hungry even immediately after eating. This is due to the fact that there are parasites that “take away” nutrients or disrupt metabolism. In more serious cases, they damage the intestinal mucosa, thereby reducing the absorption of nutrients.

A person infected with parasites often experiences digestive problems. Sudden weight loss, abdominal pain, diarrhea and overeating are caused by some parasites feeding on their host's food and injuring the intestinal wall.

There are parasites that release toxins, which causes an allergic reaction in a person, and then more serious skin problems: eczema and hives. If you notice sudden rashes or itching, see your doctor.

Another symptom is anemia. There are several reasons for its appearance. The first reason is that parasites attach themselves to the small intestine and drink the blood of the host, which leads to blood loss. Other parasites destroy red blood cells, causing anemia. The last reason is that the parasites remove iron from the body, which is necessary for the creation of red blood cells.

The last sign is muscle and joint pain. Parasites cause inflammation in the body and also migrate to the muscles, destroying them.

Treatment options for intestinal parasites depend on the type of parasite and the severity of the infection. My top advice is don't ignore the symptoms as they can lead to chronic health issues such as anemia, chronic fatigue syndrome, joint problems and fever.
