Testosterone, the main male sex hormone, helps reduce fat mass and build muscle. Endocrinologist Yulia Sidorkina explained what a man with testosterone deficiency looks like.

Male hormone deficiency immediately affects appearance. Firstly, in a man with a deficiency of this hormone, muscle mass decreases, and adipose tissue, on the contrary, increases. Fat is deposited in the abdomen, thighs and buttocks. Gynecomastia and enlarged mammary glands are possible.

Secondly, testosterone deficiency helps reduce hair growth. In men, the face swells and the skin becomes dry.

The level of the hormone begins to decline at the age of about 40 years. This process can be slowed down by changing your lifestyle, the doctor emphasized.

Functions of testosterone. Testosterone is responsible for the development of male sexual characteristics, such as voice, facial and body hair growth, and muscle and bone development. It also affects sexual function, mood, energy and overall health.

Normal testosterone levels. Testosterone levels can vary depending on age and individual characteristics. It typically ranges from 300 to 1000 nanograms per deciliter of blood.

Symptoms of low testosterone levels. Low testosterone levels can present with a variety of symptoms, including decreased sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, depression, decreased muscle mass and strength, increased body fat, and sleep disturbances.

Increased testosterone levels. The doctor may recommend tests and, if necessary, suggest methods to increase testosterone levels, such as lifestyle changes, medications or hormone replacement therapy.
