Vitamin K is very important for humans. It has two forms: K1 and K2.
Vitamin K1 is found in leafy green vegetables and helps prevent overflowing of the blood during injuries. Vitamin K2 is produced by bacteria in our intestines and is found in eggs, meat and dairy products.
Vitamin K2 is of particular interest to athletes because it supports protein processing. Protein is especially important for building muscle mass.
“In order for a protein to perform its tasks, such as transporting nutrients, protecting tissues and building muscle mass, it must be activated. This is where vitamin K comes into play. It reaches the liver and from there it is transported to different parts of the body for protein activation,” says nutritionist Igor Strokov, especially for MedikForum.
Vitamin K2 has other benefits. For example, it can dissolve deposits in the arteries, improve brain function, and help manage stress.
As a vegan, it can be difficult to get enough vitamin K2 from food as it is found mostly in animal products. Therefore, it makes sense to take vitamin K2 as a dietary supplement.
