Nutritionist explains how the guts of healthy centenarians helped pinpoint foods that can promote longevity.

Although there is no single food that can guarantee a long and healthy life, he explained that one food group seems to be particularly powerful. Based on the latest research, a nutritionist shared “anti-aging” foods that you need to eat daily.
“Genetics play a relatively small role in aging, and lifestyle plays a much larger role. Nutrition for a healthy microbiome is critical if you want to age well and survive well beyond average lifespan. Your gut microbiome describes the totality of all the genetic material of the microbes in your intestines, including bacteria, viruses, fungi and other small organisms,” says dietitian Vasilisa Ponomareva especially for MedikForum.
What and how much you eat plays a key role in whether you stay healthy or not, but equally important is the effect of this food on your gut microbiome. The gut is home to a very diverse mix of microbes.

In China, the microbiomes of 1,575 people aged 20 to 100 were compared.
The results showed that the healthiest centenarians had particularly high levels of a bacteria called bacteroidetes.
“Bacteroidetes appear to be less able to absorb the fat we consume than other gut bacteria, so people who have more of it tend to remove more calories from their bodies.”

Ponomareva recommended sticking to mostly plant-based, rich a fiber-rich diet that contains many “colorful fruits and vegetables.”
As for bacteroids and other “good” bacteria, the nutritionist advised eating fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kefir, and kimchi daily.
