Endocrinologist shared a rather unusual symptom of type 2 diabetes

An endocrinologist spoke about “rather unusual” symptoms of high and low blood sugar that may indicate diabetes.“I wanted to highlight a rather unusual symptom of diabetes – a fruity smell from the breath. Fruity breath may indicate a high level of ketones, which requires urgent attention from a medical professional,” says endocrinologist Olga Yuryeva specially for MedicForum.
The doctor noted that these acids known as ketones occur when the body breaks down fat for fuel. If the body does not have enough insulin to break down sugar in the blood, the cells lack energy. To compensate, the liver breaks down fat into fuel, with ketones as a byproduct.

This reaction can“occur if you have both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.”

“You may have a very dry mouth and extreme thirst at the same time,” Yuryeva added. “You may find that you need to urinate more often than usual; it can also be a sign of high blood sugar.”
For those suffering from low blood sugar, mood swings can be expected.

“If you feel irritable, aggressive, or confused for an unknown reason, this could be a sign of low blood sugar,” Yuryeva said.

Some people may also have trouble coordinating or have difficulty making decisions. Some people with low blood sugar may also experience a mild euphoria, which may make you feel a little drunk.

“Alternatively, if your blood sugar is high, you may feel nervous or tired. Changes in blood sugar levels can affect your mood, which usually resolves when levels return to normal.”
Anyone experiencing unexplained mood swings or smelling fruity breath should make an appointment with a doctor. If a diagnosis is not currently established, discussing symptoms with your doctor may lead to a helpful diagnosis and treatment plan. If you already have diabetes, it is recommended to talk to your doctor to monitor your blood sugar levels.

Diabetes and Depression

Type 2 diabetics are twice as likely to suffer from depression compared to people without diabetes. However, it is unclear whether depression causes type 2 diabetes or vice versa.

Now, for the first time, research has shown thatdepression directly causes an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Scientists found that higher body weight partially, but not all, explained the effect of depression on type 2 diabetes.

Seven genetic variants were also foundthat contribute to the development of diabetes Type 2 and depression. Common genes play a role in the production of insulin, the level of inflammation in the brain, pancreas and adipose tissue.
