Tea that can help with gum disease

Mouthwash containing matcha, a finely ground green tea powder, can inhibit the growth of one of the main bacteria that causes periodontitis, indicating that it can be used to prevent and treat gum disease.

Tea that can help with patients with gum disease who rinsed with a mouthwash containing matcha in their saliva had significantly less Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), the study authors wrote. </p> <p>“Our findings may pave the way for a promising, new therapeutic option for using matcha to treat patients with periodontitis,” write the authors, led by Dr. Rema Nakao of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Tokyo. </p> <p>Matcha, an intensely colored green tea, has long been studied for its possible use in the fight against viruses, fungi and bacteria. In a 2018 study, patients with plaque-related gingivitis who gargled with a green tea-based liquid had the same signs of plaque and gums as those who gargled with chlorhexidine. </p> <p>To study the potential of matcha in the treatment and prevention of periodontitis, 16 species of oral bacteria, including three strains of P. gingivalis, were added to a matcha extract solution in vitro. </p> <p>Within two hours, almost all P. gingivalis cells were destroyed, and after four hours, all the remaining cells were dead. This effect suggests that matcha inhibits the growth and reduces bacterial activity, the authors write. </p> <p>A study was then conducted on 45 people with gum disease. Participants were divided into three groups: one group received matcha powder, another received powdered barley tea, and the third group was given a powder containing the anti-inflammatory sodium azulene sulfonate hydrate. Participants made a mouthwash by dissolving the powder in water and gargling with it twice a day for a month. An oral examination was performed and saliva samples were taken before and after mouthwash use, the authors write. </p> <p>According to lab tests, those who used matcha mouthwash experienced a dramatic reduction in the bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Those who used anti-inflammatory medications or barley tea powders experienced a reduction in bacteria. </p> <p>However, the study had limitations, including that matcha was only tested using mouthwash. It is unknown to what extent mouthwash use in general reduces bacteria in the mouth. </p> <p>The authors write that using another delivery method, such as injecting matcha directly into periodontal pockets, has not been tested. Additionally, larger clinical trials of topical matcha are needed to confirm its clinical efficacy and benefit for patients with gum disease. </p> <p>“The results suggest the preventive and therapeutic potential of matcha as a combination drug for periodontal diseases,” Nakao and co-authors write. </p> </div> <div class=
